Eight years earlier, Ethan is attending university in Ottawa, Canada. One evening after seriously contemplating suicide, he finds his way into a club where he meets Mila Monahan, a beautiful acting student who saves him from himself. After he watches Mila rehearse a university play, Ethan catches the acting bug and decides to pursue his own creative passions, causing a collision with his more secure ideals. But when Mila suddenly disappears, Ethan vows he will never stop chasing the dream she inspired in him, believing in a world entirely different from the one he is living in. The Actor is a gripping tale of a young man’s unforgettable journey of self-discovery in overcoming the trauma of a personal tragedy. It is a story of love, hardship, persistence and overwhelming joy where The Actor learns he can portray anything he can imagine.

If you had to give any advice about boosting self esteem, what would it be?

Get up and do some kind of action—a chore, an activity, something you can start and finish that might be as simple as making a bed, taking a walk around the block or through a park, doing the dishes. A simple task that accomplishes something. Once you do one thing it leads to another and another.

What one thing would you say to a victim of domestic violence to help them?

Never lose hope or give up.

Is there any stereotype you feel is worse than others?

I don’t think so. Its how a stereotype affects an individual and that could be any stereotype. It’s a sad situation when a stereotype prevents someone from fulfilling what they want to do.

Do you hear from your readers? What kinds of questions do they ask?

Yes. Often. Many want to know where I get my ideas. Many ask how I go about writing and how I work. What inspires me? Who do I like to read?

With his ship crippled and his crew dead, Jarl Hawkins fights for survival in space as his dying spaceship, the Cassiopeia, drifts out of control. But there is nothing he can do, and his own death is certain. Oddly enough, rescue comes in the form of an old wizard named Kvasir, who offers Jarl his chance at a new life on Vanir, a planet unlike anything Jarl has ever encountered. There, the King fights his rivals for control of his kingdom, wild nomads roam the northern Ghost Plains, wizards and witches use magic, and an all-powerful church viciously suppresses independent thought through prison, torture, and fire. Once on Vanir, Jarl befriends the Kettlewand Rangers and is drawn into a war that he doesn’t truly understand. Separated from Kvasir, he patrols with the Rangers, witnesses the murder of a Ghost Raider, and travels to Tyr, the capital city, to locate Kvasir or another wizard. But he instead finds himself on the wrong side of the Church, and his modern weapons are taken from him and he is imprisoned for being a sorcerer. Once inside the prison, however, he finds a friend and protector, a samurai-like warrior. After a pardon from the king himself, Jarl and his new friend returns to Tyr and makes a startling—and dangerous—discovery: a translated Vanir bible. Determined to break the church’s hold on the citizens, Jarl begins to print the bible, infuriating the church leaders. His time on Vanir becomes even more dangerous, and it is only with the King’s protection that he and his printing company can survive. But Kvasir is still missing, and without the help of the old wizard, Jarl is powerless to make his way back into space.

Through the critical lens of poetry, she has looked for deeper meanings inside those experiences. Though the writer ends with an understanding that her life has not been a “crystal stair,” alluding to the hardships the titular character in Langston Hughes’ Poem--“The Negro Mother”-- faced, the writer feels that these poems, all together, reflect her world view and personal Truth.

I challenged myself to write a western and found it rather simple with a little research. I’ve written five unpublished books; perhaps I will get around to publishing them in the future. Four are fiction books. One is autobiographical; however, I embellished a trifle to make it more interesting. The other three are in sequence. Book three follows up where two left off; however, book four has it own story line with most of the same characters.

Reading and Writing by Amy Reade, author of The Ghosts of Peppernell Manor

Historical Romance Kensington March April

Reading and Writing

Though the main reason for my visit today is to introduce readers to my new novel, The Ghosts of Peppernell Manor, I’d also like to tell you a bit about myself.

I’m a cook, chauffer, household CEO, doctor, laundress, maid, psychiatrist, warden, seer, teacher, and pet whisperer (in other words, a mother and wife). I’m also a former practicing attorney.
But I’m also a writer and a reader—how could I not be, with the last name of Reade?

All writers must first be readers. And they must be passionate about reading. That doesn’t mean they have to read during every spare minute, or be able to finish War and Peace in two days, or be able to find clarity in everything William Faulkner ever wrote. It doesn’t mean that they have to love the classics, or that they have to read books in every genre. Those things are helpful, of course, but one can be a writer without those prerequisites.

What is does mean is that a writer must love to read. A writer must find the written word fascinating and lovely, and painful, and inspiring, and provocative, and ludicrous, and all the other feelings that words can evoke. I would read all the time if I could, but instead I only get a short time before bed every night to open the book I’m currently reading. I also take books in the car with me in case I have to wait for one of my children during one of the aforementioned chauffer runs. I always have a book with me when I go to an appointment, just in case I’m kept waiting and I have a few extra minutes to escape into a world created by someone else.

I recently wrote a blog post for my own blog that named the ten books I would want with me if I were ever stranded on a deserted island. They were, in order:

1.      Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
2.      Black Amber by Phyllis Whitney
3.      Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
4.      Mark Twain in Hawaii: Roughing It in the Sandwich Islands by Mark Twain
5.      Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death by M.C. Beaton
6.      Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier
7.      All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot
8.      The Man in the Iron Mask by Alexandre Dumas
9.      The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough
10.  A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

Most of the books on the list are fiction, though #4 and #7 are sort of memoirs. I had a hard time coming up with only ten books, believe me, but I forced myself. I would argue that most writers/readers would have the same trouble.

So now you know about some of the books I love to read. But as I mentioned above, I’m also a writer.

I am the author of two books of romantic suspense, both published by Kensington. The first, Secrets of Hallstead House, was released in July, 2014. It is the story of a young woman who leaves her home in Manhattan following personal heartbreak and takes a job as a private nurse to an elderly woman in the Thousand Islands of New York State. But she finds secrets there-secrets that reach into her past and into her future, secrets that someone wishes to keep hidden.

The second book, The Ghosts of Peppernell Manor, will be released on April 28, 2015 (that means my “Book Birthday” is coming up—a very exciting thing!), and is the story of Carleigh Warner, a recently-divorced restoration specialist who moves to an antebellum plantation outside Charleston, South Carolina, to begin work on restoring the old manor to its former glory. But Carleigh quickly learns that there are underlying tensions which threaten to tear apart the family that owns the manor, and she is swept into an eddy of fear and violence that promises to leave no one untouched.

I’m currently working on a third book, another novel of romantic suspense, this one set on the Big Island of Hawaii and featuring a personal chef (and thereby melding my two greatest passions—Hawaii and food!).

I invite you to visit me online in any or all of the following places:

My books are available at amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, books.google.com, kensingtonbooks.com, amazon.co.uk, amazon.ca, kobobooks.com, and indiebound.org.

The Ghosts of Peppernell ManorTitle: The Ghosts of Peppernell Manor

"Do you know what stories Sarah could tell you about the things that happened in these little cabins? They’d curl that pretty red hair of yours."

Outside of Charleston, South Carolina, beyond hanging curtains of Spanish moss, at the end of a shaded tunnel of overarching oaks, stands the antebellum mansion of Peppernell Manor in all its faded grandeur. At the request of her friend Evie Peppernell, recently divorced Carleigh Warner and her young daughter Lucy have come to the plantation house to refurbish the interior. But the tall white columns and black shutters hide a dark history of slavery, violence, and greed. The ghost of a former slave is said to haunt the home, and Carleigh is told she disapproves of her restoration efforts. And beneath the polite hospitality of the Peppernell family lie simmering resentments and poisonous secrets that culminate in murder—and place Carleigh and her child in grave danger…

Wilma CountsWilma Counts spent her formative years in Dora, Oregon, a location Germans would call a “dorf” since it was not, at the time, large enough to qualify as even a village. This was in the age of “Leave it to Beaver”, though television reception was not available that far out in the boonies. She attended high school in Myrtle Point, a logging-farming town twenty miles away. Later, she attended what was then known as Oregon College of Education in Monmouth, Oregon (now Western Oregon State University).

Armed with a BS degree in secondary education, she taught English for six years in Oregon (Bend, Astoria, and Gresham). Then she joined the Department of Defense Dependents’ Schools (DoDDS) in which she taught English, world history, and U.S. Government to military dependents, first for one year at the Navy base in Guantanmo, Cuba, then on an Army base in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and finally on an Air Force base in Ramstein, Germany. During this time, she also earned a master’s degree in International Relations from Alabama’s Troy State University. With the troop drawdown in the ‘90s, she seized the opportunity to retire early and returned to the States.

During her stint with the DoDDS, Wilma taught all levels of high school English as well as social studies classes, but most of her work was with 12th grade students. She was English department chair for several years. She especially enjoyed working with students in Advanced Placement English and U.S. Government classes—as well as working with those in the Model United Nations program. For about ten years she traveled every January with groups of 20-30 students to the International MUN conference in The Hague, The Netherlands. She loved her students (almost all of them), but found grading papers to be pure drudgery. She was twice nominated by former students to be included among Who’s Who in American Teachers.

Model United Nations trips was not her only travel with groups of high school students, She also led study tours to England, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Italy, and Tunisia. An exchange program with a school in Ivanovo, Russia, led to two important developments: (1) a humanitarian aid project that ended with American military communities in Germany donating nearly 80 tons of clothing and foodstuff to Ivanovo two years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and (2) the Russian school’s involvement with Model United Nations which has since expanded to include schools in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Wilma has also traveled widely on her own: England and Scotland; most of continental Europe; India and Pakistan; Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia; and just a touch of the Far East—Burma (as it was then called), Hong Kong, and South China. Lots of weekend getaways to France, Belgium, and Luxembourg and The Netherlands. Travel remains a keen interest, though largely of the armchair variety in recent years.

She plans a return trip to Germany next year. You can take the teacher out of the classroom—but not for long! Shortly after retiring from DoDDS, Wilma took a part-time position teaching classes in freshman English at Western Nevada College in Carson City, Nevada. At the same time, she realized a life-long dream of becoming a published writer. Eleven Regency novels and two novellas (all with Kensington) are closely linked to her love of Jane Austen’s work. In addition, she has a novel set in WWII, In Enemy Hands, born of her love of modern European history. She is among the contributors to the ALWAYS LOSTexhibition (currently touring nationwide), a tribute to the sacrifices of men and women who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Today, Wilma devotes her time largely to writing and reading. She loves to cook, but hates cleaning house. She has never lost her interest in literature, history, and international relations. She spends a fair amount of time yelling at the TV. She maintains contact with many friends from each of those lives mentioned above. She is an active member ofLone Mountain Writers in Carson City.

She considers herself to be the second most computer illiterate person in the universe, but she loves hearing from friends, former students, and readers at wilmacounts@att.net.

Starting Over by Stacy Finz Cover Reveal!

Title: Starting Over
Author: Stacy Finz
Publisher: Lyrical Press

The mountain town of Nugget, California, may be tiny, but with its breathtaking scenery, fresh air, and lovable locals, it has everything. Not to mention it’s the perfect setting for firsts—and seconds—of all kinds…

On the day of her glitzy New York City wedding, society girl Samantha Dunsbury ditches her Wall Street groom, and hops in her convertible. Her only plan is to head west. But when a pit stop lands her at a lovely Victorian inn in Nugget, she doesn’t want to leave. And when the innkeeper needs someone to fill in, Sam is thrilled to take the job—her first! For once, she’s going to do what makes her happy. She just has to figure out what happy looks like. She never expects it to look like her surly new boss…

The last thing Nate Breyer needs is a debutante dilettante mucking up his business. How his sister—and co-owner—could’ve hired Sam is beyond him. Nate’s known women like Sam before—he was engaged to one once. With no options, he’ll just have to keep his eye on her while also keeping his distance. But to his surprise it turns out Sam’s got a knack for the job, and for putting folks at ease—including Nate. As business—and pleasure—heat up their relationship, Nate finds himself ready to do anything to persuade the runaway-bride to stay permanently gone…
